In practice, round to the nearest weight your bar and plates (or machine stack) can actually load — exact decimals like 168.8 lb aren't loadable on a standard barbell.
This is where a percentage chart moves from arithmetic to estimation. The traditional coaching table (100% ≈ 1 rep, 90% ≈ 3–4, 80% ≈ 7–8, 70% ≈ 10–12, and so on) comes from a widely used strength-and-conditioning textbook reference, not a single controlled study. A 2024 meta-regression published in Sports Medicine (Nuzzo, Pinto, Nosaka & Steele) pooled 952 repetitions-to-failure tests from 7,289 individuals across 269 studies specifically to test this relationship properly. It confirmed the general pattern — fewer reps possible as %1RM increases — but also found a real, substantial between-individuals spread at every percentage, and that the bench press and leg press each follow a somewhat different rep pattern from other exercises, requiring their own separate tables. Interestingly, the same research found sex, age and training status had comparatively little effect on the relationship — exercise choice and individual variation matter more.
Earlier work reached a similar conclusion: a study of trained and untrained men performing free-weight exercises (Shimano et al., Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2006) found meaningful differences in reps completed at the same relative load depending on the exercise and training background.
What this means practically: use the chart above as a sensible starting point for programming, not as a prediction of exactly how many reps you personally will get. Two lifters with the same 1RM on the same lift can genuinely differ by several reps at the same percentage. If a prescribed percentage consistently feels far easier or harder than the "typical" rep range suggests, trust what you're actually experiencing over the chart.
Percentage ranges are commonly grouped by training goal, but the ranges below overlap on purpose — outcomes depend on far more than percentage alone, including training volume, how close sets are taken to failure, exercise selection, technique, bar velocity, rest periods, session frequency, and individual response.

Research on training adaptations increasingly supports the view that hypertrophy can occur across a wide range of loads and percentages, provided sets are taken reasonably close to failure — the percentage matters less on its own than how it's combined with volume and effort. Strength gains, by contrast, do generally benefit from at least some higher-percentage, lower-rep work, since force production is specific to the loads used in training.
Percentage-based training and RPE-based training are two different, complementary ways of prescribing the same set. Percentage-based training assigns a predetermined percentage of a previously tested or estimated 1RM — for example, "3 reps at 85% 1RM." RPE-based training instead assigns a target effort level or reps-in-reserve, adjusting the actual weight to match how the set feels that day — for example, "3 reps @ RPE 8." Both describe a similar training stimulus, but they answer related, not identical, programming questions: percentage fixes the load and lets performance (reps, effort) vary; RPE fixes the target effort and lets the load vary session to session.
