If you have ever wondered what 10,000 steps looks like on a map, the answer is closer to 4 to 5 miles than most people expect, but it depends on your height and stride. Here are clear steps to miles and kilometre charts, plus how many steps fit into a mile, a 5K and a marathon.
For an adult about 170 cm tall walking at a normal pace, 10,000 steps is about 4.4 miles, or roughly 7 kilometres. Your own distance depends mainly on your height and how you move: a longer stride covers more ground per step, and running steps are longer than walking steps.
Because the steps-to-distance conversion depends on step length, the same 10,000 steps covers different distances for different people.
| Height | Walking step length | 10,000 steps in km | 10,000 steps in miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 cm | 62.1 cm | 6.21 km | 3.86 miles |
| 160 cm | 66.2 cm | 6.62 km | 4.12 miles |
| 170 cm | 70.4 cm | 7.04 km | 4.37 miles |
| 180 cm | 74.5 cm | 7.45 km | 4.63 miles |
| 190 cm | 78.7 cm | 7.87 km | 4.89 miles |
Multiply your height by 0.414 to estimate your walking step length. Then multiply by your step count and divide by 160,934 to get miles (or by 100,000 to get kilometres, with step length in centimetres). For example, 170 cm ร 0.414 = 70.4 cm per step; 10,000 ร 70.4 cm = 7.04 km, or 4.37 miles.
Most adults take somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 steps per mile when walking. The table shows the estimate by height for walking and running.
| Height | Steps per mile (walking) | Steps per km (walking) | Steps per mile (running) | Steps per km (running) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 cm | 2,592 | 1,610 | 2,390 | 1,485 |
| 160 cm | 2,430 | 1,510 | 2,240 | 1,392 |
| 170 cm | 2,287 | 1,421 | 2,108 | 1,310 |
| 180 cm | 2,160 | 1,342 | 1,991 | 1,237 |
| 190 cm | 2,046 | 1,271 | 1,886 | 1,172 |
Running steps are longer, so you need fewer of them to cover the same distance.
Race distances are common step-count questions. The table shows approximate walking steps for three heights, rounded to the nearest 10.
| Distance | 160 cm | 170 cm | 180 cm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 km | 1,510 | 1,420 | 1,340 |
| 1 mile | 2,430 | 2,290 | 2,160 |
| 5K | 7,550 | 7,100 | 6,710 |
| 10K | 15,100 | 14,210 | 13,420 |
| Half marathon (21.1 km) | 31,850 | 29,980 | 28,310 |
| Marathon (42.2 km) | 63,700 | 59,950 | 56,620 |
Running the same distances takes fewer steps. For a 170 cm adult, a 5K is about 6,550 running steps and a marathon is about 55,300.
Use this chart for quick conversions. The last column assumes a cadence of 100 steps per minute, so adjust it if you walk faster or slower.
| Steps | Kilometres | Miles | Approx. walking time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 | 1.41 km | 0.87 miles | ~20 min |
| 5,000 | 3.52 km | 2.19 miles | ~50 min |
| 7,500 | 5.28 km | 3.28 miles | ~75 min |
| 8,000 | 5.63 km | 3.50 miles | ~80 min |
| 10,000 | 7.04 km | 4.37 miles | ~100 min |
| 12,000 | 8.45 km | 5.25 miles | ~120 min |
| 15,000 | 10.56 km | 6.56 miles | ~150 min |

Researchers often use a cadence of about 100 steps per minute as a rule of thumb for moderate-intensity walking in adults (University of Massachusetts Amherst summary of the CADENCE-Adults work). At that rate, 10,000 steps takes about 100 minutes. In practice the steps accumulate over a whole day, not in one walk. A brisk 30-minute walk at 100 to 110 steps per minute contributes roughly 3,000 to 3,300 steps.
Turning distances into steps makes goals easier to track. These examples use a 170 cm adult walking at an average pace (about 2,290 steps per mile, or 1,420 per kilometre).
A 1.5 km trip is about 2,130 steps each way, so a return journey adds roughly 4,260 steps, which is close to half of a 10,000-step day.
A 10 km walk is about 14,210 steps, and a 10-mile walk is about 22,870 steps. Hills and rough ground shorten your step, so expect more steps on trails than on a flat footpath.
If you prefer to think in kilometres, 5 km a day is about 7,100 steps, and 7 km is about 10,000 steps. You can pick whichever number you find easier to remember and check it against your tracker.
Taller people usually have a longer step, so they cover more distance per step.
Walking faster lengthens your step. Hills, stairs and sand shorten it, so the same steps cover less ground.
Phones and watches estimate distance from a default stride length unless they use GPS. If your tracker consistently disagrees with a measured route, calibrate your stride using a known distance, as explained on our stride length page.
A simple way to check your own figure: walk a measured 100 metres at your normal pace and count your steps. If it takes 140 steps, your stride is about 0.71 m (100 รท 140), so 10,000 steps is roughly 7.1 km, or about 4.4 miles. Repeat it once or twice and average the results, because a single walk can vary.
One note on consistency: the tables on this page use a stride of about 0.414 ร height, a common walking average. Our Steps to Calories Calculator uses a slightly longer ratio of 0.45 ร height, so it shows roughly 9% more distance for the same steps. Neither is exact for every person, which is why measuring your own stride is the best check.

Steps convert to distance through your step length, which depends mostly on height and whether you walk or run. Most adults take 2,100 to 2,500 steps per mile, a 5K is around 7,000 steps of walking, and 10,000 steps covers about 4 to 5 miles.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?
For an adult around 170 cm tall walking at a normal pace, 10,000 steps is about 4.4 miles or 7 kilometres. Shorter people cover less and taller people cover more, so the real range is roughly 3.9 to 4.9 miles.
How many steps are in a mile?
Most adults take roughly 2,100 to 2,500 steps to walk a mile, depending on height and pace. A 170 cm adult walking at an average pace takes about 2,290 steps.
How many steps are in a 5K?
A 5K (5 kilometres) is about 7,100 steps for a 170 cm adult walking, or about 6,550 steps running, because running steps are longer.
How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?
At a cadence of about 100 steps per minute, which researchers use as a rough marker of moderate-intensity walking, 10,000 steps takes around 100 minutes. Faster walking takes less time, and steps are usually spread across the day.
Why does my watch show a different distance?
Fitness trackers estimate distance from your step count and a stride length that may not match yours. Calibrating your stride, or using GPS for outdoor walks, usually improves accuracy.
