Joist spacing in this calculator is measured centre-to-centre — the distance from the centreline of one joist to the centreline of the next, which is the standard way layout spacing is specified. Enter the maximum spacing required for your project (from your plans, a span table, or manufacturer data) and the calculator works out how many spaces fit within your layout width, then shows the actual resulting spacing — which is always equal to or tighter than what you requested, never wider.

Actual Spacing = Layout Width ÷ Number of Spaces
For example, requesting a maximum of 400mm on a 6m layout width doesn't necessarily give you exactly 400mm spacing — it gives you 15 spaces of exactly 400mm each in this case, but on a layout width that doesn't divide evenly, the actual spacing will be slightly tighter than requested, never wider.
This calculator uses floating-point-safe rounding throughout, so a unit-conversion rounding artefact (like 15.000000000000002 instead of exactly 15) never causes an extra phantom joist to appear in the result.

Joist direction matters because it determines which floor dimension becomes the individual joist length, and which becomes the layout width used for spacing. Take a 6m × 4m floor as an example: if joists span the 4m direction, each joist is approximately 4m long, and joists are spaced out along the 6m dimension. If instead joists span the 6m direction, each joist is approximately 6m long, spaced out along the 4m dimension.
