The Percent to Decimal Formula

decimal = percent ÷ 100

Why Divide by 100?

A percentage is a number out of 100. When you write 50%, you are saying 50 per hundred, which is the fraction 50/100. Dividing by 100 works that fraction out as a plain number: 0.5. The percent sign is really a shorthand for "÷ 100", so removing it means you must do that division yourself.

Percentages Above 100%

Percentages greater than 100 convert to decimals greater than 1: 120% = 1.2, 150% = 1.5, 200% = 2 and 250% = 2.5. Be careful with wording — a final value of 200% means twice the reference amount, which is a 100% increase from the original, not a 200% increase.

Percentages Below 1%

Small percentages need care: 0.5% = 0.005, 0.1% = 0.001 and 0.05% = 0.0005. A common mistake is reading 0.5% as 0.5. It is not — 0.5% is five thousandths, one hundred times smaller. The rule never changes: divide by 100.

Negative Percentage Examples

Negative percentages convert the same way and keep the sign: -10% = -0.1, -25% = -0.25 and -150% = -1.5. They usually describe a loss, a decrease, or a value below a reference point — for example a -10% change in a share price.
