Why Extract Images from a PDF

PDFs often exist as the only copy of a photo, chart, scanned signature, or diagram someone needs on its own — pulled from a report, a brochure, or an emailed contract. Screenshotting a page loses quality and picks up surrounding page content you don't want; this tool instead reaches into the PDF's internal structure and hands back the actual embedded picture, at its original resolution.

Need whole pages as images instead of individual pictures? Use PDF to JPG & PNG. Need text instead? Try PDF to Text.

🔑 Key Takeaways

  • Extracts the original embedded picture objects, not page screenshots
  • Shows which page each image came from
  • Downloads as PNG to preserve quality
  • Different from PDF to JPG & PNG, which rasterizes whole pages instead
  • 100% private: processed entirely in your browser, nothing uploaded

Extracting Images vs Converting Pages

A PDF page's visible content can include several separate embedded image objects — photos, logos, diagrams — laid out alongside text. This tool walks through every page's internal content stream looking specifically for those embedded image objects, decodes each one, and offers it as a standalone PNG download at its original pixel dimensions.

That's a different job from rasterizing a whole page into one flat picture (which is what our PDF to JPG & PNG tool does) — this tool is for when you specifically want the pictures that are inside the PDF, not a snapshot of the page they sit on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from converting PDF pages to images?

Converting pages to images (like our PDF to JPG & PNG tool) takes a screenshot-style render of each whole page. This tool instead reaches inside the PDF's structure and pulls out the original embedded picture files themselves — the actual photos or graphics placed on the page, at their original embedded resolution.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is parsed and its images decoded entirely inside your browser using pdf.js — nothing is transmitted anywhere.

Why didn't it find any images in my PDF?

A PDF that's mostly or entirely text has no embedded pictures to find, which is expected. Also, some scanned PDFs store each page as one large full-page image rather than several separate embedded pictures — in that case, try PDF to JPG & PNG instead to get each full page as an image.

What format do the extracted images download as?

PNG. This keeps quality intact regardless of how the image was originally encoded inside the PDF, at the cost of a larger file than the original might have been (e.g. if it was originally a compressed JPEG).

Will this find every image, including ones used as backgrounds or watermarks?

It finds every embedded image object the PDF's page content references, which normally includes background images and image-based watermarks, not just "visible photos." Very unusual or heavily compressed image encodings inside a PDF can occasionally fail to extract cleanly.

Can I extract images from a specific page only?

The tool scans every page and shows which page each image came from next to its thumbnail, so you can pick out just the ones you need from the full results rather than downloading everything.
