The Story Behind "FFMI 25"

The "25" figure that circulates so widely online traces back to a specific 1995 study by Kouri, Pope, Katz and Oliva, published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine. The researchers calculated normalized FFMI in 157 male athletes — 83 users of anabolic-androgenic steroids and 74 non-users. Among the non-users, normalized FFMI extended up to what the authors called "a well-defined limit" of about 25.0. A separate reference sample — 20 winners of the Mr. America bodybuilding title from the pre-steroid era (1939–1959) — averaged a normalized FFMI of 25.4.

⚠️ What this does and doesn't mean: This is a historical observation in one specific, relatively small sample of competitive male athletes and bodybuilders from a particular era. It is not a diagnostic threshold. It does not mean everyone with an FFMI under 25 is drug-free, and it does not mean everyone above 25 uses performance-enhancing drugs. Genetics, training history, measurement error in body fat percentage, and individual variation all affect where any one person's number falls. FFMI cannot diagnose steroid use, and no individual number should be treated as proof of anything.

FFMI 22, 23, 24 and 25 — What the Numbers Mean

People often search for these specific numbers to understand where they sit. The readings below are drawn from the male research context above (Kouri et al. 1995) — for women, these same numbers would sit well above the 13.3–25.5 range reported in the available female research (Blue et al. 2019, mean 16.9), so they should not be read the same way for a female result.

None of these numbers are exact boundaries. A given person's true genetic ceiling depends on countless individual factors that a single formula cannot capture, and measurement error in body fat percentage alone can shift a calculated FFMI by a point or more.

Why the Female FFMI Chart Is Far Less Certain

Kouri et al.'s 1995 study — the source of the "25" reference point — included only male athletes. There is no equivalent, comparably designed study comparing steroid users and non-users in women to establish a parallel "natural limit" figure for female athletes.

What research does exist is more limited: a 2019 study of 266 collegiate female athletes found a mean FFMI of 16.9 (range 13.3–25.5), varying meaningfully by sport (lowest in cross-country runners, highest in football players). This gives a useful general-population reference range, but it isn't a comparable "drug-free limit" study. Any specific female FFMI "natural limit" number you see quoted elsewhere (commonly cited figures in the low-to-mid 20s) should be treated as an estimate extrapolated from the male data rather than an established research finding in its own right — we flag this honestly rather than presenting it as equally well-evidenced.

Why There's No Official FFMI Standard

BMI has official WHO categories because it was adopted as a population health-screening tool by international health bodies, based on large-scale population studies linking BMI ranges to health outcomes. FFMI has followed a different path — it emerged from nutritional-status research (VanItallie et al., 1990) and was then picked up by sports scientists studying a fairly narrow question (steroid use in male athletes). No major public health body has adopted an official FFMI classification system the way WHO did for BMI, so any "chart" — including this one — is a synthesis of research observations rather than an official standard.

Practical takeaway: use FFMI to track your own trend over time with a consistent body fat measurement method, rather than chasing a specific target number from a chart. The direction of change tells you more than any single reading.
