Step-by-Step: How to Calculate FFMI

You need three inputs: your body weight, your height, and your body fat percentage. If you don't already know your body fat percentage, get an estimate first from our Body Fat Calculator or another method (DEXA, BIA scale, skinfold, or tape measurement) — FFMI can't be calculated without it.

Step 1 — Determine your fat-free mass. Fat-free mass (FFM) = body weight × (1 − body fat % ÷ 100). This subtracts your estimated fat mass from your total weight.
Step 2 — Convert height to metres, if necessary. The formula is defined in metric units. If you measured in feet and inches, convert to total inches, then multiply by 0.0254 to get metres.
Step 3 — Square your height in metres. Multiply your height (in metres) by itself.
Step 4 — Divide fat-free mass by height squared. FFMI = FFM (kg) ÷ height² (m²). This is your raw FFMI.
Step 5 — Calculate normalized FFMI, if you want a height-adjusted comparison figure. Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.3 × (1.80 − height in metres). This step is optional and mainly useful for comparing your score with people of different heights.

Worked Example — Metric

Let's calculate FFMI for someone who is 80 kg, 178 cm tall, at 15% body fat.

💡 Notice the metric and imperial examples land on almost the same FFMI (21.5) — that's expected, since 176 lb and 80 kg, and 5'10" and 178 cm, are near-equivalent measurements. Small rounding differences are normal.

Adding the Normalized FFMI Step

Normalized FFMI exists because raw FFMI slightly disadvantages taller people — dividing by a larger height-squared figure produces a lower score for the same underlying muscularity. The correction, from Kouri et al. (1995), adds 6.3 × (1.80 − your height in metres) to your raw FFMI. If you're shorter than 1.80 m, this adds a small amount to your score; if you're taller, it subtracts a small amount. It's a comparison tool, not a "more accurate" version of your FFMI — both numbers describe the same underlying body composition.

Common Calculation Mistakes
