Getting Timesheets Right

The classic timesheet mistakes are forgetting to subtract unpaid breaks and mis-adding hours across the week — both of which this tool eliminates by computing each day as finish minus start minus break. Overnight shifts are handled correctly too: a 22:00 start with a 06:00 finish counts as 8 hours before break, not negative time. Hours display in decimal (7.5 rather than 7:30) because that's what payroll systems and pay calculations use.

Keep in mind that in Australia, employers must keep records of hours worked, and casuals in particular should keep their own copy — disputes about hours are far easier to resolve with signed weekly timesheets. Check what your take-home pay looks like with our Salary Calculator, or your overtime with the Overtime Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the hours calculated?

Finish time minus start time, minus the unpaid break in minutes, shown in decimal hours. For example, 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8.00 hours.

Does it handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If the finish time is earlier than the start time, the tool treats it as crossing midnight — 22:00 to 06:00 with a 30-minute break correctly shows 7.50 hours.

Why decimal hours instead of hours and minutes?

Pay is calculated as hours × rate, so payroll uses decimals: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50 hours. If you're converting mentally, each 6 minutes is 0.1 of an hour.

Should breaks be included in paid hours?

Meal breaks are typically unpaid, which is why they're subtracted here. Short rest breaks (10–15 minutes) are usually paid under most awards — simply don't enter those in the break column.

Is my timesheet data saved anywhere?

No — everything stays in your browser and clears when you leave. Print or save the PDF before closing the page.
