Why 6 foot is 182.88 cm and not 183. Six feet is 72 inches, and 72 × 2.54 gives exactly 182.88. Most sources round to 183, which is fine for conversation but means "183 cm" and "6 foot" are not quite the same height. The converter above uses the exact factor.

Older age groups are shorter for two separate reasons. People do lose a little height with age as spinal discs compress — commonly two to four centimetres across adult life. But most of the gap is a generational effect: Australians born in the 1940s grew up with different nutrition and childhood health than those born in the 2000s, and average height rose across that period. The two causes get conflated constantly.

Self-reported height is a poor substitute for measurement. Studies consistently find people overstate their own height, men more than women, which is why measured survey data reads slightly lower than you might expect.

The Netherlands is the outlier that keeps being explained. Dutch men average close to 184 cm, roughly 8 cm above Australians and nearly 19 cm above Indian men. Genetics plays a part, but the Dutch were among Europe’s shorter populations in the 1800s and gained more than 20 cm in a century — a change far too fast to be genetic. Nutrition, childhood healthcare and a relatively equal distribution of both are the usual explanation.
Compare these figures carefully. Some come from measured surveys and some from self-reported data, and people overstate their height — which can make a self-reported country look a centimetre or two taller than it is. Averages also shift with the age range surveyed, since younger cohorts are generally taller. Treat small differences between countries as noise.

One consistent pattern across every country: men average roughly 12 to 14 cm taller than women. Australia’s gap of 13.8 cm is typical, and the consistency is why the mid-parental formula uses a flat 13 cm adjustment.

Estimating a Child's Adult Height

The calculator above uses the mid-parental method, which is the standard back-of-envelope approach. It is worth understanding both how it works and how loose it is.

The 13 cm accounts for the average adult height difference between men and women. As a sanity check, average Australian parents at 175.6 and 161.8 cm predict a son at 175.2 cm and a daughter at 162.2 cm — both within half a centimetre of the measured population averages, which is what a well-calibrated method should do.

The range is the honest part. A prediction of 179 cm really means "somewhere between 170.5 and 187.5 cm, probably" — a 17 cm spread, and one child in twenty falls outside even that. The method uses only two numbers and cannot account for nutrition, childhood illness, when puberty starts, or the considerable genetic variation that parents' heights do not capture. Treat the figure as interesting rather than informative.

What actually tracks a child's growth is repeated measurement. A GP plotting height on a growth chart over months and years sees the trajectory — whether a child is following their own curve or drifting off it — and that is what identifies a problem. A single estimate from two parental heights cannot do this, and no online calculator can substitute for it.

When to see a doctor rather than a calculator. If a child seems to have stopped growing, is growing much faster or slower than their peers, has dropped across percentile lines on a growth chart, or if you are simply worried — that is a GP conversation. Growth problems are usually treatable and treatment is more effective earlier, so there is no advantage in waiting to see what happens.

A percentile says where a measurement sits among children of the same age and sex. It is a position, not a grade.

The trend matters more than the number. A child steadily on the 15th percentile is usually just a shorter child, and that is fine. A child who was on the 50th and has fallen to the 15th over two years is the situation that warrants attention — the same measurement means quite different things depending on what came before it. This is why growth charts plot over time rather than giving a single verdict.

Roughly eight centimetres were added between 1900 and 1980 — far too quickly for genetic change, which works over many generations rather than a few. The cause was environmental: better childhood nutrition, fewer serious childhood infections, smaller family sizes and improved public health.

The plateau is the interesting part. Australian average height has barely moved since about 1980, and the same flattening appears across most wealthy countries. The usual reading is that the population is now close to its genetic ceiling — once nutrition and childhood health are good enough, further improvement adds nothing, because the limiting factor is no longer environmental. Countries still gaining height are generally those whose childhood conditions are still improving.

This is also the clearest evidence that height is not purely genetic. A population’s genes did not change between 1900 and 1980; its living conditions did, and eight centimetres followed.

Nothing reliably increases adult height once growth plates have closed. Stretching, supplements, posture programmes and devices sold for the purpose do not lengthen bone. Good posture can make you stand at your actual height rather than below it, and that is the whole of the effect. Products claiming otherwise are selling to a wish, not a mechanism. If short stature is a medical concern, a GP or paediatric endocrinologist is the person to see — during growth years, when intervention can still work.

You shrink over the course of a day. Spinal discs compress under load, so a height measured before bed is typically one to two centimetres less than the same person measured on waking. Clinics measure at consistent times for exactly this reason, and it explains most small discrepancies between two measurements of the same person.

Common Conversion Mistakes

  1. Writing 5'12". Twelve inches is a foot — it should carry to 6'0". Rounding the inch remainder is where this creeps in.
  2. Treating 6 foot as 183 cm. It is 182.88 cm. Fine in conversation, wrong in a form.
  3. Using 2.5 instead of 2.54 for inches. On a person's height that is a 3 cm error.
  4. Converting the feet and inches separately and adding the results. Convert total inches in one step instead.
  5. Reading decimal feet as feet and inches. 5.75 ft is 5'9", not 5'75".
  6. Comparing self-reported height with measured averages. People overstate their height, so the comparison is not like for like.
  7. Treating a height prediction as a fact. It carries a 17 cm range and misses one child in twenty.

The two halves of this page have very different reliability. Converting between centimetres and feet is exact — the inch is defined as 2.54 cm and nothing is approximated. Estimating a child's adult height from two parental measurements is a rough indication with a 17 centimetre range.

Both are useful as long as you know which is which. If a growth question actually matters, repeated measurement plotted by a GP tells you something a one-off calculation cannot.
