A tax invoice is required when a GST-registered business makes a sale over $82.50 (incl. GST). It must include: your ABN, the words "Tax Invoice", the date, a description of goods/services, the GST amount, and the total price.
For sales under $1,000, a simplified tax invoice (without buyer details) is acceptable. For sales $1,000 and over, the buyer's name and address must be included.
An Australian tax invoice is an official document that records a sale of goods or services by a GST-registered business. It is both a business record for the seller and a document the buyer needs to claim GST credits. Issuing correct tax invoices is a legal requirement under the GST Act for all GST-registered businesses.
This free Invoice Builder creates fully ATO-compliant tax invoices with automatic GST calculation, ABN display, sequential invoice numbering, payment terms, and bank details. Fill in your details and the live preview updates instantly โ then print to PDF with one click.

You must register for GST if your business turnover exceeds (or is likely to exceed) $75,000 per year ($150,000 for non-profit organisations). Ride-share drivers (Uber, DiDi, Ola) and taxi drivers must register from their first dollar earned, regardless of turnover. Once registered, you must issue tax invoices for sales over $82.50 and include the words "Tax Invoice" on the document.
Invoice numbers should be unique and sequential (INV-001, INV-002, etc.). Gaps in your invoice numbering sequence can attract ATO attention during an audit, as they may indicate unrecorded transactions. The ATO expects your invoice numbers to track directly with your income records. Never reuse or skip invoice numbers.

Australian businesses have legal protections for unpaid invoices. You can charge interest on overdue invoices (typically stated in your terms). The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO) recommends 30-day payment terms for small business suppliers. The Payment Times Reporting Scheme requires large businesses to report their payment practices publicly.
Do I need to be GST registered to use this invoice builder?
No โ the builder supports both GST-registered (with GST line on invoice) and GST-free (no GST) invoicing. Select 'No โ prices are GST-free' if you are not GST registered or the supply is GST-exempt. You must register for GST if your annual turnover exceeds $75,000.
What must a valid Australian tax invoice include?
An ATO-compliant tax invoice must include: the words 'Tax Invoice', your ABN, your business name, the date, a description of goods/services, the GST amount, and the total price including GST. For sales of $1,000 or more, you must also include the buyer's name and address.
Can I add a logo to the invoice?
The current Invoice Builder includes your business name, ABN, and contact details. Logo upload is not supported in the browser-based free version. For logo-branded invoices, use accounting software like Xero ($32+/month) or Wave (free, cloud-based).
How do I calculate GST on an invoice?
GST is 10% of the GST-exclusive price. Add GST: multiply price by 1.1 (e.g. $500 ร 1.1 = $550 total). Extract GST from a GST-inclusive price: divide by 11 (e.g. $550 รท 11 = $50 GST). The Invoice Builder calculates GST automatically for each line item and shows the subtotal, GST, and total.
What payment terms are standard in Australia?
Net 14 (payment within 14 days) and Net 30 (payment within 30 days) are the most common for Australian business-to-business invoicing. The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman recommends 30 days as the standard. Include your BSB and account number on every invoice to make payment as easy as possible.
Can I save my invoice for reuse?
The Invoice Builder saves your business details in browser localStorage so you don't retype them each session. To create a template for repeated use, fill in your standard details and download the PDF. For client-specific recurring invoices, note your last invoice number and carry forward client details manually. Full template saving requires cloud-based invoicing software.
Is this invoice builder ATO-compliant?
Yes. The builder produces invoices meeting ATO tax invoice requirements: business name, ABN, 'Tax Invoice' heading, date, line item descriptions, GST calculation, and total. For invoices over $1,000, the builder includes a client name/address field that must be completed. Always review the output to ensure all required fields are populated correctly.
What happens if I don't issue a tax invoice?
Under the GST Act, buyers can request a tax invoice for any purchase over $82.50 (including GST). As a seller, you must provide a tax invoice within 28 days of a request. Failure to issue tax invoices or maintain records for 5 years can result in ATO penalties during an audit.
