In Australia, vehicle power is officially rated in kilowatts (kW). However, horsepower (hp) is still widely understood. Most Australian car manufacturers list both kW and Nm (Newton-metres of torque).

What This Calculator Does

This is a power-unit converter. Enter a figure in any unit — horsepower, kilowatts, metric horsepower, watts, BTU per hour or foot-pounds per second — and it returns the equivalent in all the others, plus a power-to-weight ratio if you want one.

It exists because the same engine is described by three different numbers depending on which market is doing the describing. An Australian brochure says kilowatts. A British magazine says horsepower. A German specification sheet says PS. Nothing about the engine changes; only the arithmetic does.

The Power Units Explained

All of these measure the same physical quantity — the rate of doing work. They differ only in size and in which part of the world uses them.

Where 745.7 comes from. James Watt defined one horsepower as 33,000 foot-pounds per minute, which is 550 foot-pounds per second. Multiply 550 by 1.3558 watts per foot-pound-per-second and you get 745.7 watts. The two imperial units in this calculator are directly related — horsepower is simply 550 of them.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the power figure you already have.
  2. Select the unit it is quoted in. If the source says "hp" or "bhp", choose horsepower. If it says "PS", "ch" or "cv", choose metric PS.
  3. Read every equivalent from the results table — kW, hp, PS, watts, BTU/h and ft-lb/s update together.
  4. Check where the figure was measured before comparing it to anything. A flywheel number and a wheel number are not comparable regardless of units.
  5. Use the power-to-weight section if you are comparing vehicles — enter power in kilowatts and kerb mass in kilograms.
Unit conversion is not a correction. Converting 165 kW measured at the wheels into 221 hp gives you the same wheel figure in different units. It does not add back drivetrain losses, and it will not turn a chassis-dyno reading into a manufacturer's flywheel claim. Measurement location and unit choice are two separate issues.

A car is advertised locally at 150 kW.

If an overseas review of the same car quotes 204 rather than 201, the reviewer is almost certainly using PS. Both numbers describe an identical engine.

Worked Example 2: An American Figure

A US-market car is advertised at 300 hp. To compare it against Australian listings:

300 × 0.7457 = 223.7 kW

That places it between a large performance SUV and a genuine sports car in Australian terms. Worth noting: US figures are usually measured to SAE J1349, which applies its own temperature and pressure corrections, so a directly comparable Australian figure for the same engine may differ slightly even after conversion.

Worked Example 3: A European PS Rating

A German car is listed at 250 PS.

250 PS is not 250 hp. It is 246.6 hp — about 1.4% less. The gap is small on paper but it flows straight into comparisons: a "250 PS" European car and a "250 hp" American car differ by roughly 2.6 kW, and the American one is the stronger of the two. Every specification you compare across markets carries this error unless you convert properly.

Worked Example 4: An Electric Motor

An electric motor is rated at 75 kW.

75 × 1.341 = 100.6 hp  |  75 × 1.3596 = 102.0 PS

The arithmetic is identical to a petrol engine — a watt is a watt. What differs is delivery:

This is why converting two figures to the same unit tells you they are equal on paper, but not that they will feel equal. A 75 kW EV and a 75 kW petrol car have identical peak output and quite different characters.

For rough mental arithmetic, kilowatts × 1.34 is close enough for horsepower, and horsepower × 0.75 gets you back to kilowatts.

The GR Corolla shows the PS gap in the wild. At 221 kW it is 296 hp — but 300 PS. Toyota's international material quotes the 300 figure, which is why the same car is described as a "300 horsepower" hatch in some markets and a 296 hp one in others. Neither is wrong; they are different horses.
Specifications change by model year and variant. The figures above were current in July 2026 — the ninth-generation HiLux launched in December 2025 with a single 150 kW diesel, replacing earlier 2.7-litre petrol and 2.4-litre diesel options, and the Australian Corolla range is now hybrid-only. Always confirm against the manufacturer's current specification sheet before relying on a number.

hp vs bhp vs PS vs kW

This is the source of most confusion, and one of the four is not what people think it is.

bhp is the one people get wrong. Brake horsepower is not a different-sized unit — 1 bhp equals 1 hp exactly. The word "brake" refers to the braking device a dynamometer uses to load an engine during testing, so bhp tells you the power was measured at the flywheel rather than at the wheels. It describes where, not how much. Anyone claiming a conversion factor between hp and bhp is mistaken.

Why Manufacturers Quote Different Numbers

Even after you have the units right, the same engine can post different figures depending on which test standard produced them. Power is measured under controlled conditions, and the standards disagree about what those conditions should be.

The bigger historical gap is net versus gross. American manufacturers once quoted gross horsepower — the engine on a test stand with no alternator, water pump, air cleaner or exhaust system fitted. Those figures were substantially higher than the same engine would produce installed in a car. The switch to net ratings in the early 1970s made muscle-car outputs appear to collapse overnight, though almost nothing about the engines had changed. If you are comparing a modern figure against a pre-1972 American one, they are not measuring the same thing.

In practice the differences between current net standards are small — a few per cent at most — but they are real, and they sit on top of any unit-conversion error. If two sources disagree about a car by a small margin and you have already ruled out hp versus PS, differing test standards are the usual explanation.

Flywheel Power vs Wheel Power

Manufacturers quote power at the flywheel. A chassis dynamometer measures it at the driven wheels, after the gearbox, differential, driveshafts and tyres have taken their share.

These are industry rules of thumb, not measured constants. Real losses vary with transmission type, oil temperature, tyre pressure and the dynamometer itself. Treat them as approximate, and never apply them as a correction to a converted figure — converting units and estimating drivetrain losses are unrelated operations, and doing both to one number compounds two different uncertainties.

Why Australia Uses Kilowatts

Australia metricated in the 1970s and adopted SI units across engineering and regulation. Vehicle power has been officially expressed in kilowatts ever since, and that is what appears on compliance documentation and in local specifications.

Horsepower has not disappeared, though. You will still meet it in:

Buying an imported car? Before you compare it against an Australian model, do three things in order: (1) confirm whether the published figure is hp, bhp or PS — bhp and hp are the same size, PS is not; (2) convert everything to kilowatts so you are comparing like with like; (3) check whether both figures come from the same test standard. A three-way comparison between 180 kW, 241 hp and 245 PS looks like three different cars. It is one car described three ways.

Power-to-Weight: Why the Same Number Feels Different

Power alone tells you very little. Divide it by mass and the picture sharpens immediately.

Identical power, and the hatchback has nearly twice the ratio that actually predicts acceleration. This is why a modest engine in a light car often feels quicker in traffic than a powerful one in something heavy, and why loading a vehicle blunts it noticeably without touching the engine. Enter power in kilowatts and kerb mass in kilograms, and it returns kilowatts per tonne, the figure Australian comparisons normally use, alongside watts per kilogram and horsepower per pound.

Common Mistakes

  1. Treating PS and hp as the same. Metric horsepower is about 1.4% smaller. A "250 PS" car has 246.6 hp, not 250.
  2. Believing bhp converts differently. It does not. 1 bhp = 1 hp. The term describes the measurement method, not the unit size.
  3. Comparing a wheel figure to a flywheel figure. Converting units does not reconcile them. A dyno reading and a brochure claim measure different points in the driveline.
  4. Using 1.36 for hp instead of 1.341. 1.3596 is the factor for PS. Mixing them up introduces the same 1.4% error in the opposite direction.
  5. Confusing power with torque. Power is a rate; torque is a force. Towing and low-speed pulling depend far more on torque than on peak power.
  6. Ignoring mass. Two vehicles with identical power can differ by 90% in power-to-weight. The brochure figure alone predicts very little.
  7. Comparing figures from different test standards. SAE J1349, DIN 70020 and ISO 1585 apply different corrections. The same engine can post different numbers under each without a single component changing.

Converting units will not reconcile a wheel figure with a manufacturer's flywheel claim.

Does more horsepower mean a faster car?

Not on its own. Acceleration depends on power relative to mass, so a 150 kW car weighing 1,300 kg will out-accelerate a 150 kW vehicle weighing 2,500 kg by a wide margin. Gearing, tyre grip, aerodynamics and where the torque arrives in the rev range all matter too.

How much horsepower does an electric motor produce?

Electric motors are normally rated in kilowatts and convert exactly as any other power figure does — 75 kW is 100.6 hp. Passenger EVs commonly range from about 100 kW to over 400 kW, while industrial motors span a fraction of a kilowatt to several hundred. Because electric motors deliver near-peak torque from standstill, they often feel stronger than an equivalent petrol figure suggests.

Convert First, Then Compare Properly

Horsepower, kilowatts, PS and watts all describe the same physical quantity, so the arithmetic is never the hard part. What matters is knowing which unit your source is using, whether the figure was taken at the flywheel or the wheels, and under which test standard. Get those three right and cross-market comparisons become straightforward.
