What "Mileage" Means in Australia

Mileage is the distance a vehicle has travelled. The word is a leftover from miles, but Australians use it freely to mean kilometres — nobody says "kilometreage". You will see it used three different ways, and they are worth separating because they lead to different calculations:

Mileage is not fuel economy. Mileage answers "how far did I go?". Fuel economy answers "how much fuel did that take?". You need both to work out cost — this page handles the distance and cost side; the gas mileage calculator works out the efficiency figure itself.

Calculating Mileage From Odometer Readings

The arithmetic is subtraction, and the discipline is in reading the right instrument at the right moment.

Distance travelled = Ending odometer − Starting odometer

Example: 84,529 − 84,217 = 312 km

Your dashboard shows two numbers. The odometer is the lifetime total and cannot be reset. The trip meter (often two of them, Trip A and Trip B) can be zeroed at will. For a single journey, the trip meter is easier. For anything you may need to prove later — business travel, a logbook, a lease return — record the odometer, because it is the number that cannot be manipulated.

The rollover case. Older six-digit mechanical odometers roll from 999,999 back to 000,000. If your start reading is 999,850 and your end reading is 000,240, plain subtraction gives a negative number. The correct calculation is (1,000,000 − 999,850) + 240 = 390 km. Digital odometers in modern vehicles do not roll over within any realistic vehicle life, but the situation still turns up in older classics and in imported vehicles.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your distance in kilometres. If you are working from odometer readings, subtract first and enter the difference.
  2. Choose a fuel type. Selecting petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric loads an indicative price and consumption figure for that category.
  3. Overwrite both with your own numbers. The presets are starting points. Your real consumption and the price you actually paid will give a far more useful answer.
  4. Read the results. You get trip cost, cost per kilometre, cost per 100 km, fuel or energy used, plus an annualised figure at 15,000 km and what that works out to per week.
Electric vehicles work here too. Selecting Electric switches the units — consumption becomes kWh/100km and price becomes dollars per kilowatt-hour. The underlying formula is identical, which is exactly why it is possible to compare a petrol car and an EV on the same page without any arithmetic gymnastics.

Worked Example 1: A Week of Commuting

Priya notes her odometer on Monday morning at 84,217 km and again on Friday evening at 84,529 km. Her car averages 9 L/100km and she paid $1.795 per litre.

Fourteen thousand kilometres a year purely commuting sits close to the national average for all driving combined — a useful reality check when you are weighing up a job further from home.

Worked Example 2: Business Mileage and Business-Use Percentage

Tom is a sole trader. He records his odometer at 62,480 km on 1 July and 68,145 km on 30 September. His logbook shows 3,116 km of those were work trips.

That 55% is the single figure the ATO logbook method turns on. Once established, it is applied to all of Tom's eligible car expenses — fuel, servicing, insurance, registration and depreciation — not just his fuel.

Mileage for Rideshare, Couriers and Trades

If driving is the job rather than a way of getting to it, mileage tracking works differently — and one point catches people out.

The empty kilometres count too. A rideshare driver logs 240 km in a shift but only 150 km of that had a passenger aboard. The other 90 km — driving to pickups, repositioning between jobs, circling while waiting — is still business travel. What is not business travel is the drive from home to the area you start in, or the drive home afterwards. Those are commuting.

Worked Example 3: Which Fuel Type Actually Costs Less?

The result most people do not expect: petrol and diesel land within six dollars of each other over a full year. Diesel burns 17% less fuel, but costs roughly 20% more per litre, and the two effects very nearly cancel out. The efficiency advantage that makes diesel attractive on paper largely disappears at the pump — which is why the honest comparison is always cost per kilometre, never L/100km alone.

Higher annual mileage changes the ranking. Because the gap between drivetrains scales with distance, someone driving 30,000 km a year sees roughly double these differences, while someone driving 6,000 km may never recover a hybrid or EV purchase premium at all.

Tracking Mileage for Electric Vehicles

The distance side is identical — an odometer counts kilometres regardless of what turns the wheels. What changes is everything downstream of it.

Where you charge matters more than what you drive. Australian home tariffs generally sit around 28–35c/kWh, dedicated overnight EV plans can fall well below that, and public DC fast charging commonly runs 45–80c/kWh depending on network and speed. At 18 kWh/100km, the same 100 kilometres can cost roughly $5 at home or around double that on a fast charger — so for an EV an accurate mileage record is only half the picture. You also need to know what share of your charging happened where.

Odometer versus battery health. For a petrol car, kilometres are the main wear signal. For an EV, battery condition tracks charge cycles, fast-charging frequency and heat exposure as much as distance — so two EVs showing the same odometer reading can be in quite different health. Distance alone tells you less about an EV than it does about a combustion car.

Average Annual Mileage in Australia

There is no current official figure, and that is worth knowing before you trust a number you find quoted online.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics discontinued its Survey of Motor Vehicle Use after the 2020 release, so no comparable national figure has been published since. That last release also covered the 2019–20 bushfire summer and the opening months of the pandemic, which depressed travel — so 13,400 km is the more representative benchmark for normal conditions.

The same 2020 survey put average passenger-vehicle fuel consumption at 11.1 L/100km across the whole fleet — noticeably higher than most new-car sticker figures, because the fleet includes a great many older vehicles. If your own figure looks poor against a showroom number, compare it against the fleet average instead.
Did you know? An extra 5,000 km a year is not a rounding error. At 9 L/100km and $1.795 per litre it adds 450 litres and roughly $808 in fuel alone — before tyres, servicing or depreciation. It also pulls a 15,000 km service forward by about four months, and adds 25,000 km to the odometer across five years of ownership, which is the figure a used-car buyer looks at first.

Recording Mileage for the ATO: The Logbook Method

If you claim work-related car expenses in Australia, mileage stops being a curiosity and becomes a record you may have to defend. The logbook method has no kilometre cap, which makes it the better option for most people driving more than 5,000 work kilometres a year — but the record-keeping is specific.

For the 12-week logbook period, you must record:

The mistake that invalidates logbooks: recording only the work trips. Your business-use percentage is business kilometres divided by total kilometres, so without the private trips there is no denominator. The ATO can reject the logbook entirely, and with it the claim.

The 12 weeks must be continuous and representative of your normal driving. Once complete, the logbook is valid for five years — but you must still record the odometer at the start and end of each income year you rely on it. If your circumstances change materially, such as a new job or a move, you need a fresh 12-week logbook. Running two or more cars under the method means keeping a logbook for each, covering the same period.

Neither method lets you claim ordinary home-to-work travel. Which one produces the larger deduction depends on your business-use percentage, how expensive your vehicle is to run, and whether you are willing to keep the records — so it is worth calculating both before deciding.

Why Mileage Matters Beyond Tax

Mileage and Servicing Intervals

Servicing is where mileage tracking pays for itself most directly. The typical Australian pattern looks roughly like this:

Your service book overrides this table. Intervals vary widely by manufacturer — some cars are due at 10,000 km, others at 15,000 km or more, and several European makes use condition-based servicing that sets its own interval. Follow the schedule in your vehicle's logbook, not a generic table, because servicing late can affect a new-car warranty.

The part most people miss is the "or 12 months". Almost every schedule is distance or time, whichever arrives first. Someone covering 6,000 km a year reaches the twelve-month mark long before the kilometre limit, because oil degrades on the calendar as well as on the road. Tracking your monthly mileage tells you which trigger will fire first — and whether you are paying for services you have not driven far enough to need.

Common Mistakes

  1. Confusing the trip meter with the odometer. The trip meter resets. If you need to prove a distance later, use the odometer — it is the reading that cannot be manipulated.
  2. Logging only business trips. The business-use percentage needs total kilometres as its denominator. Omitting private travel makes the logbook unusable.
  3. Claiming the commute. Ordinary travel between home and work is private, regardless of distance or hours. Specific exceptions exist — carrying bulky equipment, or travelling between two workplaces — but the default is that it does not count.
  4. Using a stale logbook. Five years is the maximum, not a guarantee. Change jobs or move house and the old logbook may no longer represent your driving.
  5. Mixing kilometres and miles. One mile is 1.609 km. Importing a figure from an American source without converting overstates your distance by roughly 60%.
  6. Forgetting the 30 June reading. Even with a valid five-year logbook, you must record the odometer at the start and end of each income year you rely on it.
